The VDL floor lamp was designed by modernist architect Richard Neutra in 1931. Neutra designed the lamp so it would cast its light upwards; it provides a fabulously versatile alternative to direct lighting.

This lamp was originally designed for the VDL Research House and the Ward-Berger House. This pivotal design bridges two periods of the architect's work: the boxy International Style of the late 1920s and '30s, and his more relaxed approach in the postwar years.

Born in Vienna, Austria, Richard Neutra immigrated to the U.S. in 1923, where he became an undisputed master of midcentury modern architecture. Intimately attuned to the environment, he created his unique indoor-outdoor living spaces as a corrective to the chaotic reality of modern urban life. His intention was to "place man in relationship with nature; that's where he developed and where he feels most at home."

Martinelli Luce was founded in 1950 thanks to the intuition and the desire of Elio Martinelli to build his own lighting fixtures. Martinelli began to create a vast production of lamps for interiors, with more and more attention to domestic use. Inspired by nature and geometry, Martinelli creates functional lighting fixtures, highly innovative lighting design and products with materials according to their intrinsic characteristics.

The collection includes Italian lightings of the 1960s and 1970s that have marked the history of design. Some of these lightings, along with others like the Pipistrello and the Ruspa, designed by architect Gae Aulenti, are kept in the most important design museums.

Emiliana Martinelli, who heads the company for many years, now joined by her son Marco, carries on the design inspired by the same principles of her father.
