Pottery 15cm - Lid walnut

Vincent Van Duysen
from 145,45 VAT excl.

Van Duysen’s collection of pots for when objects work is an exercise in restrained theme and variation.

Serene and sober, these pots have the abstract quality of the archetypal, but they have been pulled from abstraction into the world of physical forms, into things you want to touch and to hold. A certain material roughness is critical to their character - the slight irregularities in the surface of the clay and the soft, weathered grain of the wood.

Each piece is composed of two elements: an earthenware container and a wooden plate. Whilst the angle of the curve and the smooth profile of each pot are fixed, the diameter and the height of the vessels vary, these shifts in scale determining whether the container framed is a bowl or a platter. The thickness of the wooden plate which serves as both cover and plinth is also variable.

When combined in series, the differences of scale and colour create powerful rhythms and modulations expressed in the subtle but intense palette of a northern European sky.

However great their sense of presence as pure objects, these are vessels which are designed to be used - to contain or conceal.

Vincent Van Duysen was born 1962 in Lokeren, Belgium. He attended Architecture school at the Architecture Institute Saint-Lucas in Ghent and founded his design studio in Antwerp in 1990.
From the onset there has been a great interest in interior design with mostly residential projects - a complete architectural product with subtle transitions between architecture and interior design combined with a spatial design attitude that always searches the essence.
The use of pure and tactile materials results in a clear and timeless design. An approach that covers all aspects, with respect to context and tradition, within which the senses and physical experience of the space, materials and light place the integrity of the user at its core. Functionality, durability and comfort are the prime components of the work. An architectural language which is not shy of aesthetics, but resists fashion and trends.

When objects work is the vision of its director Beatrice de Lafontaine. The Belgian company produces and distributes exclusive objects designed by leading designers and architects whose work shares a preoccupation with basic forms, immaculate function and a timeless idiom.

William Morris famously observed that one should "have nothing in your house which you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful". From its first collection shown at the Milan Furniture Fair in 2001, when objects work has pursued the principle that everyday objects can be useful whilst having aesthetic features.

In this manner they've commissioned designers to explore the theme of decorative art as superlative domestic equipment in the fullest and most challenging ways possible and to develop innovative manufacturing solutions where necessary. Most of the objects are hand-made with authentic materials & traditional craftsmanship.
