Bold organic shapes characterize Hume's work, with an emphasis on jewel-bright colours; one of her earliest designs being the Pebble vase. Intended to be shown in groups, the play of shadow and layered colour between the forms seem like jewellery in an interior; the finishing touch.

Each Pebble is handmade, and unusually for glass, has an obvious 'touch' of the hand in its gentle form.

Kate Hume’s eponymous interior design company is based in Amsterdam and attracts a roster of international clients in search of the simple and luxurious tempered with eclectic detailing and use of colour. With a passion for combining the rare and unusual, sourcing art and antiques, and custom designing many pieces, each home is specifically tailored to the life-style and desires of her client.

Hume studied fashion design in her native England, before moving to the United States in the 1980's, to work as a consultant and stylist. On her return to Europe in 1998 she and her husband, Frans van der Heijden launched Birdman Furniture, a streamlined, contemporary range of home furnishings, referencing classic Dutch forms of the last century. Long passionate about glass and its possibilities of shape and surface texture, Hume soon launched the Kate Hume Glass collection.

Hume's work has been exhibited at galleries and stores in New York, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Kuwait and Moscow.

When objects work is the vision of its director Beatrice de Lafontaine. The Belgian company produces and distributes exclusive objects designed by leading designers and architects whose work shares a preoccupation with basic forms, immaculate function and a timeless idiom.

William Morris famously observed that one should "have nothing in your house which you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful". From its first collection shown at the Milan Furniture Fair in 2001, when objects work has pursued the principle that everyday objects can be useful whilst having aesthetic features.

In this manner they've commissioned designers to explore the theme of decorative art as superlative domestic equipment in the fullest and most challenging ways possible and to develop innovative manufacturing solutions where necessary. Most of the objects are hand-made with authentic materials & traditional craftsmanship.
