Swedish designers Anna Holmquist and Chandra Ahlsell founded the art and design studio Folkform in 2005.

The duo is committed to working with local manufacturers; they want their products to reflect the spirit and history of the place they were produced. How a product was made, and by whom is key to the narrative.

For the brass version of the Collage candleholder collection, Folkform collaborated with Skultuna's brass foundry on the south coast of Sweden. Each piece comprises a candelabra, simple tea lights, pillar candles and hand-crafted votives to create a landscape of candle typologies.

Since forming the Folkform studio in 2005, the Swedish duo of Anna Holmquist and Chandra Ahlsell has steadily developed a reputation across the Scandinavian design scene and beyond. Their relationship was nurtured while both were studying for an MA in Industrial Design at Konstfack College of Art, Craft and Design in Stockholm.

"We’re interested in the hierarchies that we bestow on materials," says Anna Holmquist.
To build a product, Anna and Chandra work very closely with manufacturing processes. Their work investigates how perceptions of a simple mass-produced material can be altered by design. The result is a series of mass produced one-offs that see value bestowed on the cheapest material going. Mass customization is a goal being pursued by many digital designers, but Folkform’s more craft-based approach demonstrates that we don’t need the latest technology to achieve this; in fact it is their primitive approach that gives their work its charm.

In less than a decade, Folkform’s output has been exhibited and sold internationally, even acquired by The Norwegian National Museum of Art and Design and The Swedish National Art Museum.

Skultuna is a Swedish company founded in 1607 at the bequest of King Karl IX. When the king wanted to implement his long held plans for a Swedish brass industry, the choice fell on the town of Skultuna, where the Svartån brook provided sufficient water power. Charcoal was available here as well and the copper mine at Falun was also close by. Today, over four centuries later, the company still resides in the very same place in Skultuna.

The first master braziers were called in from brass foundries in Germany and the Netherlands. They brought the technique to make large brass objects like chandeliers.

In the 15th and 16th century, the design work was part of the craftsmanship. At the end of 17th century, processes and work methods were standardized. This was the foundation for  what we call industrial design today.

Nowadays, Skultuna works with renowned designers like Richard Hutten, Folkform, Luca Nichetto and Claesson Koivisto Rune. The production in the factory in Skultuna continues in an unbroken line since 1607 and every year about five hundred chandeliers are built, a couple of thousand candlesticks are mounted and polished and thousands of cuff links are shipped around the world.

For over 400 years Skultuna has produced brass and sterling silver objects of the highest quality for both everyday use and for special occasions. Always with that same sense of quality, function and design, Skultuna today creates tomorrow’s antiques.
