In 1906, Gaudí finished work on the Casa Batlló, a typical urban house on Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia, which he transformed into one of the most outstanding buildings in the city. The furniture he originally designed for the main dining room is also preserved at the Gaudí Museum in the Park Güell. The Batlló chair and bench produced by Bd are an exact reproduction of those anatomical designs, both in shape and materials.

In contrast with what happened in general to almost all the Barcelona Modernista furniture (considered to be the Catalan equivalent to the Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, etc. movements at the turn of the 19th century) which ended up going out of fashion, furniture designed by Gaudí is still as modern today as it was when it was first designed. Perhaps this is because it is more reminiscent of sculpture than mere benches and chairs.

Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) is, without a doubt, the most internationally recognized Spanish architect. But it's not only his buildings and brilliant architectural solutions that have travelled the globe. His integrated conception of architecture led him to pay attention, not only to structural calculations, but also to all the decorative elements, including furniture, that would become part of a building.

Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) was a Spanish Catalan architect born in Reus, in the Catalonia region of Spain. Gaudí's works reflect his highly individual and distinctive style and are largely concentrated in the Catalan capital of Barcelona, notably his magnum opus, the Sagrada Família.
Much of Gaudí's work was marked by his big passions in life: architecture, nature, religion. Gaudí studied every detail of his creations, integrating into his architecture a series of crafts in which he was skilled: ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging and carpentry.

After a few years, under the influence of neo-Gothic art and Oriental techniques, Gaudí became part of the Modernista movement which was reaching its peak in the late 19th and early 20th century. His work transcended mainstream Modernisme, culminating in an organic style inspired by nature. Gaudí rarely drew detailed plans of his works, instead preferring to create them as three-dimensional scale models and molding the details as he was conceiving them.

It is not just his buildings and ingenious architectural solutions that have taken the world by storm. His overall approach to architecture led him to become involved with all the decorative elements, including furniture, that were to form part of the building.

Gaudí's work enjoys widespread international appeal and many studies are devoted to understanding his architecture. Today, his work finds admirers among architects and the general public alike. His masterpiece, the still-uncompleted Sagrada Família, is one of the most visited monuments in Catalonia. Between 1984 and 2005, seven of his works were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Bd Barcelona Design is the Spanish company with the highest international prestige in design. It was founded in 1972 as Bd Ediciones de Diseño by the architects and interior designers Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluis Clotet, Mireia Riera and Oscar Tusquets. At the time of its foundation, Bd Ediciones de Diseño was a mere expression of almost insolent rebellion by a group of young, unsatisfied architects, but it soon became a productive philosophy with a mission to break moulds, even commercial ones.

The Bocaccio Design (a clue for those who were not already in on the secret) of the Barcelona of the early 70s was created as a vehicle for the production of all those items of furniture, objects and accessories which could not be found in shops. It might have turned out to be nothing more than an arrogant idea, but in fact became a unique experience, offering an interpretation of design hitherto unknown in Spain: a new sensibility, a different perception of everyday objects.

In this way, contemporary creations co-exist with those of the great universally admired masters. Konstantin Grcic, Jaime Hayón, Ross Lovegrove and Alfredo Häberli have shared space with Antoni Gaudì, Salvator Dalí, Ettore Sottsass and Giuseppe Terragni.
