The 2097 pendant was designed by Gino Sarfatti in 1958. Sarfatti was obsessed with light and the elegant simplicity of the light bulb. He always believed that the most important element of a lamp was the shape of the bulb itself. The 2097 suspension lamp is a fine example this idea: the center of attraction is the ensemble of 30/50 light bulbs, each supported by a straight brass arm extending from the central column. The cords to the bulbs are suspended along the bottom, rather than being drawn inside the pipes that hold them.  The curve of each cable mimics the curves of a traditional chandelier.

Although conceptually minimalistic, this modern classic, which provides a warm and diffused light, is a masterpiece of elegance.

Gino Sarfatti was born in Venice in 1912 and studied aero-naval engineering at the University of Genoa.

In 1939 he started working in the lighting industry and setup the company Arteluce which soon became a national and international reference point for the modern architecture movement in lighting. The company became a meeting place and an important forum for many of the leading Italian designers of the 50s and 60s such as Franco Albini, Gianfranco Frattini, Sergio Asti or Ico Parisi.

During his thirty years of activity, Gino Sarfatti designed and produced over 400 lighting objects and was constantly involved with research and innovation in typology, materials, production technologies, light sources, technical lighting effects and design aspects.

So it is Sarfati, for example, who in 1971 designed the very first lamp to use halogen bulbs.

Throughout his career Sarfatti and Arteluce won numerous prizes and awards including the Compasso d'Oro in 1954 and 1955, and the Honorary Diploma of the Milan Triennale.

In 1973 Arteluce became a division of Flos and in 1985 one of the greatest minds of 20th century lighting design passed away in Gravedona, Italy.

FLOS was founded by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina in 1962 in order to deliver contemporary lighting in accordance with their modern furniture designs. Their main guiding principles were "collaboration with the most inventive international designers and courage to be daring and provocative, yet uphold the fundamental principles of design". These guidelines are still relevant and can be traced in the entire Flos collection up until the company's latest designs.

From the very beginning FLOS has always been characterized by its high-quality approach towards design and but also towards production.

The result is a catalogue filled with iconic lighting objects that have changed the concept of illumination itself. Testament to this are the numerous awards, critical accolades and inclusions in all the major permanent collections and design museums around the world.

FLOS Lighting's production will continue to be imbued with various design trends that embody their attention to leading-edge research combined with highly-efficient production.

In 2012, FLOS celebrated half a century of excellence in production of designer lighting.
